Visitation of a specialist pollen feeder Althaeus hibisci Olivier (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) to flowers of Hibiscus moscheutos L. (Malvaceae). J. Torrey Bot. Soc. 132: 197–203. 2005.—We investigated visitation of a bruchid seed beetle, Althaeus hibisci Olivier, to flowers of Hibiscus moscheutos L. (Malvaceae) under natural conditions. We examined movement of the beetle among flowers that were in different developmental stages, the correlation between corolla size and pollen production, and the correlation between beetle density and corolla size. Beetles moved diurnally from wilted Hibiscus moscheutos flowers that had opened on the previous day to newly open flowers. Beetles did not move to unopened flowers as long as petals were covered by sepals. The results demonstrate that the beetles use corollas as a cue to locate flowers. Hibiscus moscheutos flowers produced pollen in proportion to corolla size; therefore, beetles visiting larger flowers had a high probability of finding larger amounts of pollen. We detected positive correlations between beetle density and petal area when beetles were abundant. Although the correlation coefficients were small (r 5 0.24–0.32), they were statistically significant or marginally significant. On the other hand, the correlations were not significant when the density of beetles was low suggesting that the preference for larger flowers is not always detectable and its strength varies with beetle density under natural conditions.

Temporal and Geographic Variation in Predispersal Seed Predation on Hibiscus moscheutos L. (Malvaceae) in Ohio and Maryland, USA
—Seed predation has the potential to strongly reduce seed production and thereby act as a selective force on the evolution of flowering traits and other defenses against herbivory. We characterized levels of predispersal seed predation on Hibiscus moscheutos (Malvaceae) during 2001 and 2002 at four sites in Ohio and Maryland, USA. The seed predators were a weevil, Conotrachelus fissinguis (Cole...
متن کاملEffects of sequential pollination on the success of "fast" and "slow" pollen donors in Hibiscus moscheutos (Malvaceae).
Competition among pollen grains for the chance to fertilize ovules typically involves two stages: arrival times on stigmas and/or the growth of pollen tubes through styles. In a previous study of Hibiscus moscheutos, we found that individual pollen donors often differed in pollen tube competitive ability. Here we determined whether short delays in pollen arrival time altered the average success...
متن کاملHydrochory as a determinant of genetic distribution of seeds within Hibiscus moscheutos (Malvaceae) populations.
Seed dispersal is a major determinant of the spatial genetic structure of plant populations. In this study, we evaluated the role of distinct hydrologic regimes in determining the spatial genetic structure of the seed bank of the wetland plant Hibiscus moscheutos. We analyzed seeds in surface soil samples collected in the autumn and the following spring by determining their allozyme genotypes a...

Background: The flowers, calyx and seeds of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) are used in traditional medicine for management of edema, cancer, constipation, hypertension, fever, liver and nerve diseases. In Nigeria, a decoction of the seeds is used in folk medicine to enhance or induce lactation in cases of poor milk production. But its potential for toxicity when administered during pregnanc...

Hibiscus section Muenchhusia is a North American taxon with ve species as recognized in the most recent taxonomic revision: H. coccineus, H. dasycalyx, H. grandiorus, H. laevis, and H. moscheutos. To investigate the monophyly of Hibiscus section Muenchhusia, its relationship to other Hibiscus species, and the phylogenetic relationships among its species, DNA sequence data were obtained.
